Wild Insect Welfare: Mitigating Harms to the Very, Very Many

Description
Terrestrial arthropods like insects are among the most abundant animals on our planet. New research suggests that some of these animals, especially at the adult life stage, may be sentient. If they can suffer, what might harm these animals in the wild? And, how could humans change our practices if we wanted to mitigate those harms? This talk will briefly introduce the evidence for sentience in insects, the number of insects estimated to live in the wild, some welfare harms wild insects may face, and how humans could intervene or otherwise change our practices with the goal of reducing those harms. Finally, the talk will conclude with a brief mention of some other terrestrial arthropod groups that are often neglected in discussions of sentience and suffering: chelicerates, myriapods, and ancestral hexapods like springtails.
