COVID-19 Vaccines: Facts and Misconceptions

Executive Director of the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing (HIGN) and NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing Professor Dr. Tara Cortes hosts Dr. Sarah D. Berry, Dr. Sandra Crouse Quinn, and Dr. Michi Yukawa to discuss the COVID-19 vaccine facts and misconceptions.
Dr. Tara Cortes, Dr. Sandra Crouse Quinn, and Dr. Michi Yukawa are currently serving on the COVID Prevention Network Expert Panel funded by NIH, which reviewed vaccine trial protocols for safety and efficiency in older adults and is currently working on messaging and distribution of the vaccines.

Berry, MD, MPH (Associate Director & Associate Professor of Medicine @Hinda and Arthur Marcus Institute for Aging Research & Harvard Medical School, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center) Dr. Sarah D. Berry is the Associate Director of the Musculoskeletal Research Center at the Hinda and Arthur Marcus Institute for Aging Research in Boston, Massachusetts. She is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School (Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center). Dr. Berry’s primary research focus has been on outcomes following hip fractures, both in the community and nursing home settings. Presently, Dr. Berry serves as the co-PI for an NIA supplement to the IMPACT Collaboratory aimed to mitigate racial disparities in COVID-19 testing of nursing home staff and residents. Sandra Crouse Quinn, PhD (Professor and Chair, Family Science @UMD Department of Family Science & UMD Center for Health Equity) Dr. Quinn is Professor and Chair of the Department of Family Science, Director of the doctoral program in Maternal and Child Health, and Senior Associate Director of the Maryland Center for Health Equity, School of Public Health, University of Maryland. From 2011-2017, she was Principal Investigator (with S. Thomas) for the Center of Excellence in Race, Ethnicity and Health Disparities Research, and the PI on a study, Uncovering and Addressing Cultural Beliefs behind Vaccine Racial Disparities. She is currently PI (w. D. Broniatowski, George Washington University) on a NIGMS grant, Supplementing Survey-Based Analyses of Group Vaccination Narratives and Behaviors Using Social Media. Michi Yukawa MD, MPH (Clinical Professor & Medical Director @University of California, San Francisco/Division of Geriatrics & San Francisco VA Medical Center) Dr. Michi Yukawa is a Clinical Professor in the Division of Geriatrics and a Medical Director of Community Living Center (CLC) San Francisco VAMC. Dr. Yukawa is committed to serving as the Medical Director for the Community Living Center (CLC) at the San Francisco VAMC and to working with others to provide compassionate and comprehensive care to the veterans. She also supervises geriatric medicine fellows in Geriatric Medicine outpatient clinic at the VAMC, and she attends on inpatient medicine service at the San Francisco VAMC. Dr. Yukawa’s research interests include improving nutrition, preventing weight loss and improving perioperative care of older adults.
