Dean’s Public Square Series presents: “The Future of Children’s Literature”
Following the news, have you been wondering about the future of Dr. Seuss or the lifespan of Babar? Then please join us for a panel discussion by children's literature thought leaders:

Philip Nel, University Distinguished Professor, Director, Program in Children's Literature, Kansas State University, will present about “The Future of Childhood Nostalgia; or, How to Break Up with Your Favorite Racist Children’s Books” discussing how it’s difficult to admit how pain and love are entangled in cherished artifacts of our childhood, but confronting this fact is the best way to dismantle the White-supremacist delusion of cancel culture — and to create a more inclusive, diverse culture for contemporary children.

Ebony Elizabeth Thomas, Associate Professor Literacy, Culture, and International Education Division, University of Pennsylvania, will talk about “The Dark Fantastic: Race and the Imagination in Youth Literature, Media, and Culture” highlighting how humans read and listen to stories not only to be informed but also as a way to enter worlds that are not like our own.

Michelle Ann Abate, Professor of Literature for Children and Young Adults, Ohio State University, will discuss “No Kids Allowed: Children’s Literature for Adults” which examines the paradoxical new genre of “children’s literature for adults.

Poushali Bhadury, Assistant Professor, Department of English, Middle Tennessee State University, will talk about children's literature in international settings.

Panel discussion and Q&A will be moderated by Kendra Tyson, The Linda May Uris Library Media Specialist at New York University and Manager of The Constantine Georgiou Library and Resource Center for Children and Literature.
